How MailBasket 2 Works

Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000 use an enhanced version of the Internet Information Server's SMTP service to send and receive external email. MailBasket 2 monitors the SMTP service - when an inbound message arrives it checks each recipient against all email addresses in Active Directory. If an incoming address isn't found, MailBasket 2 processes it according to the settings for domain it has been sent to.

MailBasket 2 handles multiple recipients in messages smoothly. If a message has a combination of valid and invalid addresses then MailBasket 2 will deliver the message to the valid addresses and send a copy of the message to the "catch-all" mailbox for each domain with an invalid address.

MailBasket 2 is an ActiveX DLL that runs as a COM+ application. It consumes no system resources between activations, nor does it interfere with the Exchange server's processing of internal emails in any way.

How MailBasket 2 is Priced

MailBasket 2 licenses are sold on a per-server basis, regardless of the number of mailboxes, domain names or SMTP email addresses an organization has. One license is necessary for each Exchange 2003 or 2000 server that receives Internet email. Licenses are not needed for "back end" servers that do not receive Internet email.

Hardware & Software Requirements

MailBasket 2 requires Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server with Service Pack 4 or higher or Windows 2003 Server or Enterprise Server and either Exchange 2000 with Service Pack 3 or higher or Exchange 2003 with Service Pack 2 or higher. Any server that meets the minimum requirements for Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2000 will also support MailBasket 2.

Please note that MailBasket 2 does not work with most POP3 connectors. These connectors typically bypass the SMTP service when retrieving mail and/or modify the internal format of the message in such a way that it is not recognized as an SMTP message.

MailBasket 2 is not certified for use in a clustered environment, nor has it been tested with Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server.
